Art Begets Art
What is Decoupage?
At its most fundamental, decoupage is the art of layering various paper cutouts to a surface and sealing them with glue or varnish to create a seamless design. Decoupage’s roots can be traced back to ancient civilizations, including China, Persia, and Europe. In the 19th century, decoupage was especially popular in Victorian homes.
As a contemporary art medium, decoupage serves as a channel for inspiration and reinvention.
Art that begets art.
It allows existing works to be reimagined, recreated, and brought to life in a whole new way. My practice of decoupage breathes new life into two-dimensional pages, transforming them into tangible 3D pieces that you can welcome into your home.
Art As Devotion
Decoupage is a way to reimagine works that speak to me. Each piece I create is a homage to the artists, the art, and its legacy. The process of creating each piece incorporates devotion: bhakti. Perhaps the highest form of gratitude. This infuses each piece with an energy that transcends the physical boundaries of the object. Art that you can see – and feel. But if that sounds like some hippie nonsense to you, they’re just really cool to look at, too.
We make art for the same reason that we breathe. Because, like breathing, creation is the lifeforce energy that defines human existence. And what is art, if not the divine expressing itself through an agent, a vessel, a conduit.
By creating art, we open new avenues of inspiration, sparking a continuous cycle of expression and renewal. With the medium of decoupage, the energy invested in one piece of art serves as a catalyst for further creations.
Each work of art I create celebrates the transformative and regenerative nature of the creative process.
